National Federation of Demolition Contractors

The National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) is the principal trade body for the demolition industry in the United Kingdom, representing specialist demolition contractors and associated businesses. Although primarily focused on demolition, the NFDC has significant relevance to the scaffolding and access sector due to the close working relationship between demolition and scaffolding operatives on site, particularly in relation to temporary works, propping, shoring, and the erection of debris containment structures. The federation promotes high standards of safety, competence, and environmental management across the demolition sector and works with regulatory bodies, principal contractors, and other trades to ensure safe site interfaces.

NFDC membership is open to demolition contractors operating in the UK and the federation provides members with technical guidance, training support, and access to a network of specialist advisors. The NFDC administers the Demolition Industry Conciliation Board (DICB) and manages its own card scheme — the Demolition Industry Competence Scheme (DICS) — to verify operative competence. Scaffolding contractors who work regularly in demolition environments, or who provide temporary works support on demolition sites, benefit from understanding NFDC guidance on site interfaces and safety management. The federation’s close relationship with the Health and Safety Executive and its active participation in cross-industry working groups make it an important voice for safe working practices across demolition and related access trades.
