The Scaffold & Shoring Institute (SSFI) is a division of the Scaffold & Access Industry Association (SAIA) dedicated specifically to the development and maintenance of technical standards for the scaffold and shoring industries in the United States. Established in 1955 and subsequently integrated into the broader SAIA structure, the SSFI has long served as the principal body responsible for producing the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and SSFI standards that govern the design, erection, inspection and use of scaffolding and shoring equipment across North American construction projects. Its technical committees bring together manufacturers, distributors, erectors and engineers to develop consensus-based standards that form the regulatory and operational backbone of the industry.
The SSFI’s published standards — including the widely referenced SSFI Scaffolding Safety Requirements and the Shoring and Reshoring guidelines — are recognised throughout the United States construction sector and inform both contractor practice and regulatory compliance. By providing detailed technical specifications for frame scaffolding, tube and clamp systems, suspended scaffolds and shoring frames, the SSFI plays an essential role in promoting safe working at height practices across the industry. Its work supports not only the efforts of OSHA in setting minimum legal requirements but also elevates best practice well beyond those statutory thresholds, making it a vital resource for engineers, safety professionals and scaffolding contractors operating throughout North America.
