What to know when buying work boots

Choosing the right work boots is critical on site. This guide outlines what matters most, from waterproofing and grip to fit and insulation.

What to know when buying work boots

The right footwear is not optional on an industrial job site. Trainers and casual shoes offer no meaningful protection against the hazards workers face daily, and wearing them puts employees at serious risk of injury. For scaffolders, construction workers, contractors and subcontractors, a reliable pair of work boots is essential kit.

But not all work boots are equal. Before purchasing a pair, it is worth understanding what separates a boot that will last and protect from one that will let you down when it matters most.

Waterproofing is critical

Of all the factors to consider when selecting a pair of work boots, waterproofing is among the most important. Moisture inside a boot is not merely uncomfortable, it can cause blisters, skin conditions and, over time, contribute to cold-related health problems if workers are exposed to low temperatures for extended periods.

Waterproof and water-repellent are not the same thing. Water-repellent boots will shed light rain but will not prevent saturation in sustained wet conditions. Workers who spend the majority of their time outdoors should look specifically for boots rated as waterproof, not simply water-resistant.

Slip-resistant soles

Slip and fall incidents are among the most common causes of injury on construction and scaffolding sites. The underfoot conditions on a typical site, wet surfaces, mud, metal platforms and, in colder months, ice, mean that the outsole of a boot needs to provide genuine grip across a variety of surfaces.

When assessing a good pair of work boots, check that the outsole is specifically rated for slip resistance. For those working in winter conditions or at height in cold weather, a sole compound designed for low temperatures is preferable, as standard rubber can harden and lose grip in freezing conditions.

Fit is the most important part

A boot can be waterproof, slip-resistant and well-insulated, but if it does not fit correctly it will cause problems. Poor fit leads to blisters, fatigue and, in extreme cases, musculoskeletal strain, particularly where workers are on their feet for long shifts.

Work boot sizing does not always correspond directly to trainer sizing, so it is advisable to try boots on before buying where possible. Leather boots will soften and give slightly with wear, whereas steel-toecap or composite-toecap boots will not. A boot that feels tight on first wear is unlikely to become comfortable over time. Opt for the next half-size or a wider fitting if there is any doubt.

Ankle support is worth paying attention to as well. A boot with a higher collar and adequate cushioning around the ankle reduces fatigue and helps maintain stability, which is particularly relevant for scaffolders working at height or on uneven surfaces.

Insulation is pivotal for outdoor workers

For workers in factory or warehouse environments where temperature is controlled, insulation in a boot may be of limited concern. For those working outdoors, and scaffolders in particular, given the exposed nature of much of the work, the level of insulation in a boot matters considerably.

The right level of insulation depends on both the conditions and the level of physical activity involved. Workers who are moving continuously will generate their own heat and may find a heavily insulated boot causes discomfort through sweating.

Those in more static roles, such as supervisors on site, will generally require more insulation. In either case, a breathable lining that allows moisture to escape is preferable to one that traps sweat inside the boot.
